Admission Requirements

The school admits as regular students, applicants having a high school diploma or the recognized equivalent (GED). The prospective student must pass an entrance exam prior to being accepted. The applicant must be capable, both mentally and physically, of performing the tasks involved at the school, as well as on the job, for the chosen career field.

In some instances applicants without a high school diploma or GED, may be accepted. These applicants will be given the Wonderlic test to determine acceptance. A minimum score of 15 is required. (See special circumstances/conditions section). All enrollment applications are reviewed by the Vice President of Operations prior to final acceptance to our course(s) of instruction.

Persons desiring admission should apply in person at a school office between the hours of 9:00a.m. and 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday. Other hours will be arranged by appointment.

D.O.T. Physical Examinations

I.T.S. staff collects and reviews every student's D.O.T. physical examination and drug screen results. Close attention is paid for successful completion. Since this is an I.T.S. entrance requirement, students who have physical problems which prevent passage of the physical or who fail the drug screen are not accepted for training.

The applicant must:

  1. Be interviewed at the school.
  2. Be at least 18 years of age.
  3. Have an acceptable driving record to obtain a (TIP) Temporary Instruction Permit from the Secretary of State.
  4. Complete and pass the Department of Transportation Physical Examination and Drug screen.
  5. Have the ability to read, write and speak the English language.
  6. Meet the requirements of the Motor Carrier Federal Safety Regulations, Qualifications of Drivers.
  7. Take the school entrance test and obtain a qualifying score.
  8. Complete an Enrollment Agreement.
  9. Submit information which may be required to determine qualifications.

Special Circumstances/Conditions

When a student did not graduate from a high school or receive a GED certificate, s/he is always given an examination to satisfy his/her Ability to Benefit. Since this is a timed examination, a student may fail to complete the test, with a passing score. When this happens and the student expresses a sincere desire to enter our program, s/he may be referred to our Vice President of Operations, and student advisor for evaluation.

If all of the parties are in agreement that this student will benefit from our training, and that his English skills are such as to qualify him under Department of Transportation Rules and Regulation, a waiver of general ability to benefit procedures may be signed and the student may be accepted for training.

Credit for previous education and training

Any applicant with previous tractor trailer driving experience and/or training will be evaluated for their driving skills, general trucking and Department of Transportation knowledge. If it is determined that the applicant does posses adequate and competent skills which reflects obvious experience and/or training in the field of tractor trailer driving, he will be awarded credit with enrollment in a course of shorter duration, geared to the more experienced driver.

Credit for previous experience is available to students who enroll in the Commercial Truck Driver and/or the Tractor Trailer Driver Specialist courses who have successfully completed the Basic Truck Driver course. Students who already hold a CDL-A will also be evaluated for appropriate credit and placement.
